I'm from out of town and looking for a mechanic who's familiar with /5 transmissions. I haven't been able to find anyone online (European Motorcycles of Pittsburgh seems not to work on older bikes).

Details: I'm from Chicago and in week one of a two week road trip on a 1971 R75/5 and currently in Pittsburgh and on my way to College Station. About 100 miles ago, the bike started making grinding noises when in low gears and at low speeds. I assume it's the transmission. About 50 miles ago, the groaning was joined by chirping. There are no (other) issues with the clutch function. An unusual but light clanking persists while rolling with the clutch engaged. There are no noises in neutral even while rolling. I just got the bike back from its annual service with the guys at Motoworks in Chicago before starting on the trip, all the fluids are clear and topped up (double checked yesterday, after the issue started). I've been on a number of long trips on this bike and never had problems.

Thanks,

Jason

Craig Immel in Greesburg is said to be one of the best airhead wrenches around. Unfortunately, I don't have his contact info. Hopefully someone else will jump in with that.

Good luck.

Thanks Jan and Frank! I got in touch with Craig and will bring the bike by this morning! Hopefully it's something easy.

As far as I know, European Motorcycles of Pittsburgh does work on any Beemer, no matter what the age. John Rupert, one of their top-flight technicians has always done a great job on my R100RT of 1989 vintage, and I have no doubt John could handle anything new or 'well matured'. I don't know who would have said they don't...unless things have sure changed recently. :)

Craig Immel rocks... it pays to get your AirHead "Immelized" by Craig. You won't regret it.
