I have one of those -- Carl Hartz kindly sold his to me. It's a great bike. Airhead (naturally). Pre-84s had 70 HP. BMW, to meet European EPA standards, when they started to make them again due to demand, did so with milder tuning (they weren't going to keep making them after '84, thinking the K-Bikes would be all the rage among Beemer owners (HA!!!), and finding that wasn't the case for all the old boxer-engine lovers, began producing the R80RTs and R100RTs again, I believe in 1987-88, and continued to do so until 1995). However, the later versions had the engines detuned to produce only 60 HP to meet those EPA requirements. By then, the GSs had the new single-sided swing arm and that was transferred over to the 'new' R80/100RTs. So while the up-to '84 R100RTs had double sided swing arms and 70 HP, the post '87 R100RTs had single sided swing arms and 60 HP. Mine's a 60 HP, but if I want I can still blow off most Hardly Ablesons. On top of that, reports claim that their fairing is as good as the old Vetter Windjammer fairings that would keep a rider dry in a frog strangler as long as you kept moving...and I can attest to the fact that they did. These old airhead R100RTs if taken care of are like the Energizer bunny--they just keep going and going and going. They're great touring bikes! I suspect that anyone finding Tom's selling his and who knows anything about them, will snap it up if the price is right.
