I’m the proud owner of a1967 R50/2 that has been in our family since new. It’s all original and took best of show several years ago at the Mods and Rockers gathering.
I’ve had a problem for the last several years with fouled plugs. Last week, after installing some new Bing carb parts, I fired it up to take it for a ride. After warming it up briefly, I was about to pull out when I heard what sounded like something breaking internally, followed by a severe knocking sound. I immediately shut it off, restarted it briefly, just to confirm what I thought I heard, then shut it off again.
I took the valve covers off and gently turned the engine over by hand to verify the valves operated, thinking maybe the cam chain broke, but everything looks good. I’m looking for a /2 mechanic to take this to. I was given the number of a Bob Bancroft in Ohio, but there is no answer. Does anyone know if Craig Imel is still working on old BMWs, or is there anyone else who may help? I really don’t want to drive to Bobs BMW in Maryland, but will if I must.

Hi Jim,

Sounds like a beautiful bike. Bummer to hear noises like that! Have you tried calling Craig? I hear he's mostly "retired", but maybe your case would intrigue him? 724-759-1726

Laurel Highlands BMW club member Tim Papinchak is a good cycle mechanic. Their Prez, Jason, could put you in touch. 814-615-9138

We've been happy with work done by Mathias BMW Cycle in New Philadelphia OH, a long-time dealer. Maybe they would know someone?

I talked to Craig. He’s completely retired now and no longer working on bikes. He said that Windber Cycle (between Somerset and Johnstown) is good and has been working on BMWs almost as long as him. I called Windber and he said he’s too busy to work on it now but would call me when available. Hopefully I can get it looked at over the winter.
Thanks for your suggestions, I’ll keep them in mind.

I didn’t know the name of his business, but Windber Cycle Works is the Tom Papinchack, of which I spoke. Highly experienced & recommended.

His wife has won or placed at the top of the BMW MOA female high mileage rider category every year.
